SRExpert vs Headlamp

Where Headlamp ends and operations begin

TL;DR — Headlamp (Kubernetes SIG UI) vs SRExpert

Headlamp is the official Kubernetes SIG UI project - Apache 2.0, free, and the recommended successor to the Kubernetes Dashboard that was archived in January 2026. It is a genuinely good UI: multi-cluster views, RBAC awareness, an active plugin ecosystem. What it is not is an operations platform. Security scanning, compliance evidence, alerting and on-call are things you assemble from separate plugins and products, then host and patch yourself. SRExpert ships them integrated and maintained, with 6+ AI models and a 30-day free trial of the full platform. Keep Headlamp if you want a free cluster UI you run. Choose SRExpert when you want the operations layer without building it.

Why Teams Choose SRExpert

Over Headlamp (Kubernetes SIG UI)

Compliance Evidence, Not Just Scanning

SRExpert runs continuous CIS benchmark scans and maps the results to SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001 and NIST, so what comes out is an auditor-ready report rather than a list of findings. Headlamp has no compliance layer at all - the security plugins you can add to it report issues, but mapping those to a framework and producing evidence is manual work you own.

Alerting and On-Call in the Same System

SRExpert deduplicates and correlates alerts across clusters, routes them through 10+ notification channels, and holds the on-call rotations and escalation policies in the same place - cutting alert noise by up to 70%. Headlamp has no alerting system and no on-call concept. Notifications, escalation and rotations come from other tools you integrate and maintain separately.

Six-Plus AI Models with Cluster Context

SRExpert integrates Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Qwen, DeepSeek and OpenRouter for natural-language operations, root cause analysis and troubleshooting, with the platform's own view of cluster state behind the answers. Headlamp's AI Assistant is a community plugin still marked alpha, tied to a model and API key you supply and maintain yourself.

Managed or Self-Hosted, Your Choice

SRExpert runs as a managed platform or self-hosted on your own clusters via Helm - and for closed networks, an in-cluster agent connects outbound so no inbound firewall port is ever opened. Headlamp is always something you deploy and operate, whether in-cluster or as a desktop app. That is fine when you want the control, and a cost when you do not.

One Product to Upgrade, Not Six

Scanning, compliance mapping, monitoring, alerting, on-call, Helm operations and AI arrive as one platform with one upgrade path. The Headlamp equivalent is a stack of independently versioned plugins and external tools, each with its own release cadence, its own breaking changes and its own failure modes to learn.

Team Access with SSO and Audit Logs

SRExpert adds an organisational layer above cluster RBAC: SSO through Microsoft and Google, roles and groups, team management and audit logs of who did what. Headlamp reflects the Kubernetes RBAC of whoever is logged in, which is correct behaviour for a UI but leaves team structure, joiner-leaver handling and audit trails to be solved elsewhere.

Headlamp AlternativeKubernetes UIKubernetes Dashboard SuccessorCompliance AutomationSmart AlertingAI Operations

Credit where it is due. Headlamp is an Apache 2.0 project that now lives under the kubernetes-sigs organisation, and after the Kubernetes Dashboard was archived in January 2026 the SIG UI recommendation points to Headlamp as its successor. It runs as a desktop app or an in-cluster web UI, it is RBAC-aware so the interface reflects what your credentials actually allow, it has added multi-cluster views and a Projects concept for grouping resources, and its plugin ecosystem on Artifact Hub is active. If what you want is a free, well-maintained Kubernetes UI, Headlamp is the right default and this page will not pretend otherwise.

The Assembly TaxHeadlamp's extensibility is real - there are community plugins for Trivy, Kyverno and Kubescape, and an AI Assistant plugin in alpha. But each one is a separate project you install, configure, upgrade and debug, and none of them produce a SOC 2 or PCI-DSS report at the end. SRExpert ships scanning, framework mapping, alerting and AI as one maintained product.

The distinction that matters is scope. Headlamp is a user interface for Kubernetes resources. SRExpert is an operations platform. Those overlap in the part where you look at your cluster, and diverge everywhere after it. Continuous CIS benchmark scanning mapped to SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS and ISO 27001. CVE detection across running images, misconfiguration checks and exposed-secret scanning. Alert deduplication and correlation, with on-call rotations and escalation policies attached. Six or more AI models with cluster context, rather than an alpha plugin you point at your own API key. In Headlamp, each of those is either a community plugin you adopt and maintain, a separate product you integrate, or simply absent.

Free to Install Is Not Free to RunApache 2.0 means no licence fee. It does not mean no cost. You host it, you secure it, you patch it, and you carry the on-call for it - Headlamp is self-hosted software and needs the same patching discipline as anything else you run. SRExpert is available as a managed platform or self-hosted via Helm, so self-hosting is a choice rather than an obligation.

The assembly cost is the honest comparison. A team that wants what SRExpert ships by default usually ends up running Headlamp plus Trivy plus Kyverno plus Prometheus plus Alertmanager plus a paging tool plus a spreadsheet holding the compliance evidence. That is six systems to upgrade, six sets of credentials to rotate, and still no single place that answers "is this cluster compliant, and who is on call for it". That is a perfectly reasonable trade when you have platform engineers to spend on it. When you do not, the assembly never quite finishes.
